The journey of learning to wood carve is a physical and spiritual endeavor for both the student and the mentor. I’ve heard it said that the material you choose to create with, becomes your teacher. What stories would the mask tell you…this particular mask was created to inspire and guide university students in the way of the mask. They each witnessed the process of carving from start to finish. Each class was the ‘next step’ for them along their own personal journey of creation. The half finished concept allowed the students to see the potential of what a mask could become…a transformation effect from state to another.
