mENTORSHIP PROGRAM

An immersive Wood Carving Mentorship Program, led by the Alaskan Native Artist David John Angaiak.  Learn the ancient art of wood carving and Yupik mask making.

This program offers a blend of traditional and modern techniques designed to develop your skills as a wood carver; no prior experience is required.

pROGRAM hIGHLIGHTS

  • Yupik Mask Carving: Explore the history and cultural significance of Yupik masks from the perspective of the mentor.

  • Skill Development: Master both beginner and advanced carving techniques, including wood selection, tool safety and maintenance, and sharpening.

  • Tradition Meets Innovation: Navigate through traditional and modern color mediums, wood finishing, and wood bending techniques.

  • Personal Projects: Craft your own functional story mask, designed for traditional use.

  • Tools Included, receive and utilize your own set of high-quality carving tools selected by the instructor.

Program Structure

In person learning

Engage in personalized instruction at the artist’s studio.

Commitment

Participate in 20 sessions, each 3 hours long, once a week with your instructor.

By the conclusion of the program, you'll have a robust understanding of wood carving techniques, a strong foundation in Yupik mask making, and your own wearable artwork.
