Introduction to Yup’ik Mask Making

Introductory Course | In-Person

This package introduces you to the history of Yup’ik story masks, tools, tool safety, carving, and finishing techniques, required to create your very own functional story mask. Carving and woodworking tools are made available for students to use in the studio. Wood material, natural earth pigments, stains, paints, and feathers, are all included with your package.

Duration:  3 hour segments, once per week, for a total of 8 classes

ALUMNI EXTENSION PACKAGE

Alumni Course | In-Person

This package provides the opportunity to continue on your journey of mastery, in the traditional arts of wooden mask carving, tools, implements, and finishing techniques. This training package provides the opportunity to work one-on-one with the teacher, as you focus on a specific project, or choose to explore new areas of interest.  Carving and woodworking tools are made available for use while you are in the studio.

Duration:  3 hour segments, once per week, for a total of 10 classes

  •  $2500  (Value of $3125)

    Student(s) must have completed an Introductory Course to be eligible.

Art is fun together

Alumni | In-Person, Bi-Monthly Subscription

Alumni have the opportunity to continue honing their skills alongside the teacher.  Having learned the basics of wood carving…you set the pace, you choose the project, and you have the freedom to create while utilizing the woodworking tools of the art studio!

Duration:  Duration: 3 hour segments, two per month

  • $550

    This is a scheduled in-person, group event, with up to a three student limit. 

    Student(s) must have completed an Introductory Course to be eligible.

This is a great way for Alumni to set time aside with the teacher, to focus on specific areas of their art, all while being able to utilize the equipment in the studio.

Duration:  3 hour segments

    This is an in-person, one-on-one session.

A Yu’pik Expression In A Modern World | Artist Talk

Join the artist David John Angaiak along his journey to understand how culture, religion, and commerce has impacted the art of traditional Yup’ik mask making, as he explores the question "How does one comprehend functional artwork, often only viewed in a static environment today?"
